DEFENSIVE MEDICINE
(OH S#IT, I THINK I’VE BEEN SHOT!)
Elk Grove, CA — October, 25 2025 | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is designed for anyone—medical professional or not—who wants to learn how to recognize and respond to life-threatening injuries in the critical moments before EMS arrives. Whether you're a firearms owner, someone who carries, or simply someone who wants to be ready to protect your family in an emergency, Defensive Medicine gives you the skills and confidence to act under pressure.

How long will it take for EMS to get to you or a loved one after a traumatic injury? In a life-or-death moment, your actions matter. You may be the first—and only—responder for minutes that feel like hours. This course prepares you to take charge of that moment and keep yourself or someone else alive until help arrives.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
You'll receive hands-on training in:

  • Bleeding control (including tourniquets and wound packing)

  • Gunshot wound care and penetrating trauma

  • Airway management

  • Shock recognition and treatment

  • Brain injuries and other critical trauma

  • Building and evaluating individual med kits

This course asks an essential question: Do you spend as much time training to treat injuries as you do preparing to defend against threats? The life you save will likely be your own—or someone you love.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR
The course is led by Senior Chief Petty Officer Jim “Doc” Amentler, an honorably retired and decorated U.S. Navy Corpsman with extensive operational medical experience. Doc has served as:

  • Medical Department Head for a Coastal Riverine Squadron

  • Medical Chief for both a Marine Corps Battalion and a Seabee Battalion

He is a certified instructor in:

  • Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC)

  • Combat Life Saver (CLS)

  • American Heart Association (BLS)

Through Alpha Safety Training—an American Red Cross Training Site and an ASHI (American Health and Safety Institute) Training Center—Doc continues to provide high-impact, real-world medical training. He is also an NEC 9502-certified Navy instructor with a reputation for engaging, practical instruction that prepares students to respond under stress.
